Subject: Prioritizing Accessibility Funding for People with Disabilities
Dear [CANDIDATE'S NAME],
I’m reaching out to you during this election campaign because people with disabilities need financial support to cover the cost of basic and essential assistive devices.
Many people face significant financial barriers when it comes to accessing essential mobility and accessibility equipment. Some of this equipment is partially covered by the Ministry of Health’s Assistive Devices Program (ADP), but many basic and essential items, such as bathroom and accessibility aids, are not covered.
This medical equipment helps:
-
Ensure that individuals receive the support they need for optimum development, physical health, and well-being.
-
Enhance independence at home and in the community.
-
Support inclusion in social, educational, and community activities.
-
Protect the health and safety of both individuals and caregivers by reducing falls and injuries.
-
Reduce stress and financial hardship for those who cannot afford these necessary items.
Unlike Ontario, the governments of British Columbia, Alberta, and Quebec fund many more categories of medical equipment.
Although organizations sometimes help with the cost of this equipment, charities rely on donations, and demand for this basic and essential equipment frequently exceeds available funds. As a result, many people go without the essential equipment they need to live safely and independently.
A small increase in ADP’s total budget would fund these necessary assistive devices. Such an increase represents a minimal amount that would benefit countless individuals by providing them with essential equipment that they do not currently have.
I urge you to request that the Ministry of Health covers an expanded range of basic and essential medical equipment and look forward to an update from you on the progress that is being made. We need to get this done.
Sincerely,
